How to pick the lube

How to pick the lube

Posted by Elena Galetskaya on

Intimate lube is a type of sexual product that can be used to increase the amount of natural moisture on your skin. It's especially helpful in dryness, ageing, or when you may have little lubrication during sex.

Lubricants can do so much more than just make things wet. They often have additional functions, like exciting and prolonging sex; they may even help you last longer in bed!

Why do you need them?

If you use sex toys, natural lubrication is not enough for comfort and pleasure. Use a water based or hybrid (water+silicone) lube to avoid irritations. Simply apply some on genitals and the device before using it.

Anal play could not be performed without special lubricant. There is no way you should put a finger, sex toy or penis into someone’s butt without lubricant. The anus, unlike the vagina, does not have its own lubrication. Penetration without lube will not bring fun to either partner or could be traumatic.

Sometimes there is just not enough natural lube, and this is normal. Hormonal changes, stress etc. can influence female lubrication. So don’t worry, just take a lube.

Saliva is not so good for oral sex, as an oral lubricant. There is a really huge difference between a blowjob with and without oral lube. More glide, more fun.

Important note: the type of lubricant must be appropriate for its application. Lubricants for anal and vaginal sex have different pH and different textures, which means it’s not worth using one instead of the other, to put it mildly.

Manufacturers have long been trying to make a universal, all-in-1 lubricant, but so far it hasn’t worked out very well.

Which ingredients in lubricant must be avoided?

Parabens. Some studies have proven that parabens have a cancerogenic effect. But some brands still use these substances as preservatives.

Chlorhexidine. Still used as a preservative agent, but it has a negative influence on the vaginal microbiome.

Lidocaine. Provokes skin numbness and irritation. We don’t recommend using a lubricant for oral or anal sex with lidocaine - you should not lose your throat or anus sensitivity during any of the sex practice. Unwanted pain is a signal that something goes wrong. Even if you don't feel it, the sex could be traumatic for you.

Polyquaternium-15. It provokes skin irritation.

Oil-based lubricants should be treated with caution: they often cause skin irritation and can provoke thrush. In addition, oils have a destructive effect on latex condoms. There are plenty of other, safe options for intimate lubricants.

With devices made of silicone, you should use only water-based lubricants! Even if it is medical silicone, like SVibe.

If you're looking for a way to spice up your love life, then try using lubricant. It's easy and fun!
